In my previous blog posts, I have told stories about some of my favorite vacations. I have been to a lot of different places around the world, each time learning about the culture and way of life of the place I visited. I always try to make sure to learn at least one new thing about every sight I see.
St. Barths
One of the most unique vacations I have taken was to St Bartholomew, which is located in the Caribbean Sea. In order to get to the French island, I had to fly to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Then, I had to take a prop plan and land on a minuscule run way, which is dubbed the most dangerous runway in the world. The plane has to quickly descent over a cliff and stop quickly, or else the plane will continue straight into the ocean. Luckily, we landed safely, and the journey began. A family friend owns a sailing yacht, which was where we stayed. The yacht, named Zenji, is a Perini Navi, and is extremely luxurious.
The reason why the yacht was in St. Bartholomew was because it was going to race in the St. Barth’s Bucket, which is the reason for the vacation. All of the greatest sailing yachts in the world took part in the race, and it was incredible to be a part of such a thing. At night, there were all sorts of events, where everyone talked about their yachts and it was amazing to hear everybody’s stories. I specifically remember a Danish family talking about their yacht, Parcifal, and it was just fascinating to hear how much that boat means to them.
Near Disaster
The racing was something I had never experienced before. It was a three-day race around the island. Zenji had about 30 people who were a part of the racing crew, and had come just for the event. On the third day, we were fighting to win the race, and there was a section of the race where the boat had to go in the middle of two rocks. The space between the rocks wasn’t too narrow, but it would’ve been risky to have to boats pass through at the same time. Nevertheless, another boat tried to pass us while we were going through the rocks, and it almost turned into a disaster. Luckily, we never collided, but video footage showed that the two boats were about a foot away from coming together. If we would have struck each other, it would have been disastrous both for the people on the boats, and for the boats themselves. We ended up coming in 3rd place out of 25 boats. It was a vacation I will never forget.
