The Difference
Most people in today’s society have a few different personalities. They have their counterfeit disposition when in a group of people in which they are not familiar with. Then, they have their normal personality when they with their friends and people they are comfortable with. Although it is the same person, when exposed to certain stimuli, they act in completely different ways.
Dr. Banner
When Dr. Banner was around his friends and loved ones, like Betty, he was a great guy. Betty described him as 'fun, energetic, and smart'. He cared a lot about his job and his life. However, when Dr. Banner was exposed to people where he got angry, like Talbot or Ross, he acted like a completely different person. He turned into Hulk, and was definitely not like the Bruce Banner that he was when around Betty. He turned into a giant green monster that caused mass destruction to the world.
The urging question to this is if he should be responsible for his actions when he is exposed to certain stimuli. When Banner becomes the Hulk and is causing demolition of the city, he is still Bruce Banner. However, he does not act like Bruce Banner. As a result, he should still feel responsible for his actions, as he is the only one to blame for the wreckage he causes.
He should be entered into some sort of anger management class in order to control his outbursts of anger. I feel that if he went somewhere where he could work on his anger, he would have far less outbursts, causing him to be the real Bruce Banner most of the time.
Dr. Jekyll
Dr. Jekyll was a normal guy before his antics began to take over his life. He was a man living in London, where he was minding his own business. He may not have been an extremely popular guy, but he was respected within the community. However, when he was exposed to a certain potion, he turned into a different person.
Through the potion, he turned into Mr. Hyde. He was described as “pale and dwarfish, he gave an impression of deformity, without any nameable deformation” (Stevenson 67). The thing that separates Bruce Banner and Dr. Jekyll is that Dr. Jekyll truly enjoyed his time being Mr. Hyde. I feel that Dr. Banner did not quite enjoy being Hulk, as it was uncontrollable. As a result, I feel that Dr. Jekyll should be held more responsible for his actions than Dr. Banner.
Conclusion
It is true that Dr. Banner and Dr. Jekyll have a dark side. However, Dr. Jekyll created the issue himself, whereas Dr. Banner’s issue is mostly uncontrollable. To a certain extent, Dr. Banner should feel responsible, because he can try to contain his anger by seeing a specialist. However, Dr. Jekyll initiated his own evilness, which is why he should be held responsible for his actions.
