Every school has someone that a lot people aspire to be in terms of academic performance. For me, that person at my school is Serene. She works hard at her studies and her grades reflect her work ethic. I wanted to look closer and see what Serene is all about.
Cultural Background
Firstly, Serene's family is from Lebanon. Lebanon is located on the Mediterranean Sea and is just to the north of Israel. Both of Serene’s parents were born in Lebanon. How her parents met is quite a fascinating story. Her father studied in America and then met his wife. They moved to Chicago together. Then they settled in Tallahassee, where Serene and her sister were born. After some time in Tallahassee, Serene and her family settled in Orlando.
Religious Beliefs
Like her family, Serene is a Muslim. She prays 5 times per day, the times are spread throughout the day. Serene also wears a headscarf. She didn’t wear one when she was a young girl, but chose to wear one at the age of 11. At the time, she saw her older sister wearing it, and made the decision to also wear a headscarf. Although it is not required, Serene tries to go to Mosque when she can.
Family
Serene’s home consists of her mom, dad, sister, and herself. She has 8 cousins who live all around the globe. However, most of her family lives back home in Lebanon. Serene only gets to go back and visit Lebanon every few years. She also has some relatives in Pennsylvania and Arkansas. During family gatherings, Serene is only allowed to speak Arabic. She can speak Arabic relatively well, but not as well as her family members in Lebanon. She notes that during the family gatherings, it is very loud.
Experiences
Serene has done some great things in her life. She has climbed a mountain, while in Atlanta. She notes that event as something that she will not forget. Serene moved to her current school in 7th grade. Before moving, she attended a public school. Serene says that she greatly disliked the school, and states that her current school is better by quite a margin.
Plans for the Future
Serene plans on continuing to get good grades in school, and be involved in clubs. She wants to use her positive academic performance to get into a good college. She expressed her desire to leave her hometown for college, but feels it will be hard to leave her family. Serene has compiled a list of things she hope to accomplish in the future:
- Travel to England (loves the scenery and shops there)
- Go on a train
- IB Program
- Possibly major in engineering; possibly minor in art/design
- Out-of-state college
- Maybe start a side business: selling crocheted things
- Volunteer at an animal shelter
- See snow
- Move her miniature garden outside and actually have a real one
- Get married to someone she loves
- Be happy
One thing is for certain, Serene’s future is bright!
