Mankind and Evil
Mankind is the most distinct species of creatures on the planet.
There are brilliant people like Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln, etc. However, there is always a little bit of evil lurking among each and every one of us. Only some people’s evil leaks out enough for the world to see their true colors. Those select groups of people find a way to exert their overflow of evil. It could be through harming others, harming themselves, or something else to cause havoc on society.
Is Mankind Good or Evil?
As a whole, mankind is a congregation of kind, warm-hearted people. However, there are just a select few, a 0.1% that are villainous and sinister to the 99.9%. In “Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, Robert Louis Stevenson portrays Dr. Jekyll exactly like the evil souls in our society. Internal issues ooze out of the body and create something (or someone) that causes mayhem in the world.
Dr. Jekyll, a man described as ‘mysterious’ (Stevenson 8) and ‘isolated’ (8) fits the bill perfectly for the vile 0.1% roaming the same streets as the other people. He employs his evil and wickedness by creating his version of Mr. Hyde. His objective in doing so is to magnetize the attention of society to Hyde and not to himself. He also intends to take advantage of weak and vulnerable people. Jekyll eventually gets so immersed in Mr. Hyde that his evil reveals itself too much, leading to his demise.
In “Shrek Forever After”, an evil man, Rumpelstiltskin, attempts to take advantage of a vulnerable Shrek. Along with Shrek, Rumpelstiltskin tries to make the lives of all other hardworking ogres’ lives miserable. Similar to Dr. Jekyll, he tries to trick others into thinking he is someone that he isn’t. However, he takes it too far and his evil reveals itself too much, which causes his downfall as a man in power.
Conclusion
Through the examples of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” and “Shrek Forever After”, it can be seen that that there is not a definitive answer to whether mankind is good or evil.
The vast majority of men and women in society are great people with great intentions in life. On the other hand, there are unfortunately a select few who don’t necessarily have the right intentions. However, I feel that the number of these people are slowly decreasing, which means society will be a healthier and safer place to live in.
